Two Weeks Under My Belt

Hello blogger friends! Please don't think I forgot about you, I've been super busy student teaching!

I've got two weeks under my belt and am well into week three. I am currently teaching reading and begin science soon. I'll be doing the moon phases so expect me to post some fun pictures from my lessons.

I am looking forward to two things: (1) my science unit and (2) watching the GIANTS win the Superbowl!

Get "Angry" with Your Review Games!

Are your students obsessed with Angry Birds. I know plenty of students are! Heck. . .I myself am, I play it on my prep.

I created a review board game with an Angry Birds theme. The birds either push students forward or send them back.

The neat thing about this is that you can use it multiple ways, I've created flash cards for students to answer and I have also inserted questions right into the board game.

I just uploaded my Angry Birds game board zip file to my Teachers Pay Teachers website and since the game is such a hot craze I've put it on sale too!

Check out my game and be sure to let me know how it goes it in your room! Happy bird flinging to you and your students!

Beef Up Your Bullying Lessons

Are you forced to teach a lesson on bullying? I recently was, especially with all the new strict HIB laws. I used Jerry Spinelli's Maniac Magee as a part of my lesson and there are plenty of books to help you teach an anti-bullying message.

I've uploaded a document I used in my lesson on my Teachers Pay Teachers store, since bullying is such a hot topic why don't you download it for free! The document is a bullying experience questionnaire for students. I used it before my lesson (as the prior night's homework.) Students will write about an experience with bullying as a victim, bully, or bystander - it serves as a great hook for your lesson possibly using literature!

Updating Your Poetry Unit

Do you teach poetry during the year? Many of you probably do - I just finished a condensed unit before the holidays. I did something many people don't do though, I added a focus on poets.

Each day of our unit we had a "poet of the day" and students loved adding a new poet to the Poet-Tree and learning about various poets. Take a look at that leaf, students were on the edge of their seat ready to fill it out! We learned about Prelutsky, Silverstein, Lear, and Whitman.

Each poet had a mini-biography including some life information, a photo, and a poem or two of theirs. I couldn't get over how some of the students read ahead.

All of this PLUS the poetry passport students used (and reminded me to stamp) are all available at my brand new Teachers Pay Teachers store. The poet leaf and biographies come as a package and you can get the passport for free (isn't that a teacher's favorite word?!)

Spice up that poetry with some poets - the kids will love it!

My Current Read

My current read is "hysterical" to say the least. I recently became a Kindle Fire owner and have searched hours for free books, this is just one of the ones I now own.

"Jack Woodson was a thermal design engineer for four years until he was laid off from his job. Now, as a teacher, he faces new challenges. Conference calls have been replaced with parent conferences. Product testing has given way to standardized testing. Instead of business cards, Jack now passes out report cards. The only thing that hasn't changed noticeably is the maturity level of the people surrounding him all day. Learn Me Good is a hilarious first-person account, inspired by real life experiences. Through a series of emails to Fred Bommerson, his buddy who still works at Heat Pumps Unlimited, Jack chronicles a year-in-the-life of a brand new teacher. With subject lines such as "Irritable Vowel Syndrome," "In math class, no one can hear you scream," and "I love the smell of Lysol in the morning," Jack writes each email with a dash of sarcasm and plenty of irreverent wit."

I love it and if you are a Kindle owner you can currently own it for FREE!

Starting Two New Journeys

As I sit here tying to make my blog look "pretty" and "cute" like thousands of elementary school classroom across the country I am sitting here starting two new journeys.

The first journey may seem obvious - I am blogging. I want to blog my experiences in the classroom. I think of myself as creative and this seems like a good forum to share that.

Now what experiences am I blogging you may ask? That is my second journey - I am just over a week away from my student teaching. In a few days I'll begin my "journey," my career, as a student teacher in a 4th grade classroom. I can't wait!
